Switzerland and the European Union / Use of the Euro in Switzerland
I noticed you changed "Switzerland is in the unique position of being surrounded by the Eurozone" to "Switzerland is in the nearly unique position ....". What other country is in that position? Unless you count Liechtenstein, in which case "Switzerland and Liechtenstein (which both use the Swiss Frank) are in the unique position", but that looks ugly. Somebody (not you) changed "Swiss Franks" to Swiss francs". "Franks" is the majority (German) spelling and does link correctly, but I do accept that most banks in the UK use "Swiss francs" TiffaF (talk) 06:47, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- Andorra, Monaco, San Marino... Neither of them are part of the EU, ergo they are not part of the Eurozone. - SSJ ☎ 07:24, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

- But they all use the euro. I think I'll change it to "Switzerland is in the unique position of being surrounded by countries which use the euro" TiffaF (talk) 08:49, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Frenchification
Hi. The use of Frenchification is not an error. We've checked extensively and it seems that on the internet the use of Frenchification with and without a capital is about equal, and thus whether or not to capitalize it is ambiguous. We've chosen to capitalize it, so at this point, it is just consistency that matters. -Oreo Priest talk 00:35, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- Then I'm ok with it. I though it was an error. - SSJ ☎ 00:37, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Categories
If you want to change Category:European Union symbols to Category:Symbols of the European Union, that's fine—but you can't just create the category, move all of the articles, and then ask for the old one to be speedily deleted. The way you change the name is through a proposal at WP:CFD. If other editors agree with your proposal and there is a consensus to make the change, then it will be changed. Thanks. - Do you think we should merge Template:Politics of the European Union into the mini version, like most countries have? - SSJ ☎ 16:52, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

-
- Interesting point, I did partly attempt it in my 2009 update as I didn't quite like the style of the mini version (with the borders and cramped nature, it doesn't have much of a clean style). I think if we do, we need to think about creating a better style. Other thoughts are if there are things that could do with being visible universally (i.e. we could show the names of the presidents but not details on elections, treaties etc.) and and the order (we could show the institutions together, then notable people - getting around future problems such as the HR being in both the Commission and Council). Thoughts?
- And yes, I do have to over complicate every issue :).- : 18:21, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- I really like what you've done there! The white bars for the institutions are excellent. But on the treaties; aren't the amending treaties just confusing people? If people want to know how the EU really works, we should perhaps work on how to present the founding treaties (possibly create separate articles for them). What do you think about that? - SSJ ☎ 18:36, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- I don't really know how to show the politicians and the institution together in a better way. - SSJ ☎ 18:45, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry for delay. Right, what do you mean about creating pages for the founding treaties, they all have their own pages already. On the leaders, I am working on something new here, it is still a bit of a mess though.- : 14:15, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

- I don't think readers will understand the process of amending founding treaties when articles treat the Treaty of Rome like a synonym of the Treaty establishing the European Community. People have to understand that the Treaty establishing the European Community and the Treaty on European Union combined constitute the legal basis of the EU today. They are the de facto EU constitution, they were not historic "founding documents"; they are founding it today. Maastricht launched the Treaty on European Union, it isn't Treaty on European Union.
-
-
-
-
-
- IMO we should distinguish the founding treaties (Treaty establishing the European Community and Treaty on European Union, not Maastricht and Rome) that are being amended more clearly from the amending treaties (Amsterdam, Nice) by creating new articles with the proper titles. If it's too hard for us who are non-lawyers to distinguish the two, we could start a combined article for the two and call it Legal basis of the European Union or Founding treaties of the European Union. People could be taught more effectively that the amending treaties are amendments and not autonomous rulebooks. Founding treaty = constitution, not some document referred to in past tense. The fact that accession treaties can amend the founding treaties is seemingly not mentioned anywhere.
-
-
-
-
-
- Template:Politics of the United States doesn't list amendments to the American Constitution. Accordingly I don't see why we would list amendments of the EU's founding treaties in the EU's political box. I reckon the fact that e.g. Nice is called Nice, instead of "amendment number X" confuses people, especially when its placed next to Rome, which currently is alleged to be a founding treaty. - SSJ ☎ 14:55, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

- Good point, but first Maastricht is technically the EU treaty, just amended. Just like you might have "The Clean Water Act 2001", and it would be amended. The end result is different from what was passed in 2001 but it is still "The Clean Water Act 2001". What I think you are getting at, is an article called Consolidated treaties of the European Union, though that I think overlaps with the remit of Treaties of the European Union. Perhaps we can start by having the consolidated data in that article and then, once we have an idea of what we are working with, split it off onto an article on its own.
- Second point, there are too man amendments to the US constitution to list. I included them in the box as it does no real harm, we could take it out but the space saved is minimal as it is drop down. We just have a few names and the amending treaties do show the development of the EU (well, they would if the articles were decent) and hence show off the political history. Furthermore, I only included Nice (as that would give the most up to date view of the constitutional basis in the absence of a consolidated treaties article) and Lisbon (as that is a current political subject).- : 23:21, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

- Alright, Rome and Maastricht are the founding treaties. I just found it very frustrating that virtually all articles about EU treaties don't seem to 'understand' the issue of what a founding treaty is (not that I'm an expert). When the Maastricht article says "It created the European Union", its misleading people to think of it as an historic text.
-
-
-

- I know you know what I mean. Wikisource doesn't have the successively amended consolidated versions of the founding treaties, only the meaningless amending texts. I think it stinks that we have to send people who want to read about the timeless Treaty establishing the European Community to a retrospect article called Treaties of Rome. We just have to do what we can in order to improve the articles and differentiate the founding treaties from the amending treaties. I'm glad you added the clarifying brackets in your sandbox, but we could also emphesise the timeless legal existence of the EU's founding treaties by referring to them by their formal names. I personally think Treaties of the European Union is a very generalising title (sounds like an open list or a vague name for Founding treaties of the European Union and the treaties which amend them). The role of amending treaties could easily described in a section of a renamed article called the e.g. Founding treaties of the European Union. I'm not totally sure; but I feel that writing an informative introduction to Treaties of the European Union is not as easy as it could be if the article's title had been more specific. If we keep the article's title as inclusive as it is right now, it would make sense to include the EC's accession treaty to the WTO and all other treaties which involve the EU. - SSJ ☎ 22:58, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
- I think people understand that the articles title refers to those treaties that form the legal basis of the EU, not those treaties which the EU is itself party to. Any confusion there is dealt with in the lead and the use of the word founding limits it to Rome and Maastricht. I think what we should do is concentrate on giving a better outline on the main treaties article of the over all changes and maybe putting more in Rome to show the original treaty and, through describing its history, the amended version. Just like one would describe a constitution as it was first signed and then talk about amendments and the result of what it says today.- : 16:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi again.

Perhaps not, looking at this screenshot from Firefox v2.0.0.16 running on a Windows XP PC. Apart from the collisions between the subheadings and the [show] links, note the hanging dividers and the wider gaps between lines within the subsections. Sardanaphalus (talk) 01:18, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

- No I haven't, but it's brilliant! The maps are amazing and the text is probably even better. Everything we need. E.g. I noticed the boulevard plans are mentioned. Surely there must be some PD-old tag we can use on those city planning maps from pre-1850. A lot to process. But why did I choose Spanish instead of French in school?! - SSJ ☎ 22:12, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
-
- I'm wishing I studied harder at it for sure! Almost too much to process, most of what they're talking about will need new articles I think and a lot more on the rebuilding programme. One think I noticed is that there is no mention of the new square near Leopold, hence it is either a recent or unoffical idea or it won't actually be there at all. I am still sceptical about it being an extension of Luxembourg, that would have been mentioned in here I think. Might be worth emailing them about to clear it up but considering we have the massive pedestrian mall of Parliament, I doubt they'd create another right along side it.- : 09:23, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Map work
Greetings! I am the (primary) author of BlankMap-World6.svg, a world map often used for country locators, at least until your maps came along! ;) I am duly impressed (puts my pitiful SVG skills to deep shame!) I know there will always be a place for my map (primarily for showing world-wide data - indeed I made it easy to show this by having the countries easily selectable - something the orthographic maps of yours obviously can't show), but I want to add to the voices to have your orthographic maps used for all country locations, at least the larger ones. I'm thinking as a fellow SVG cartographer, if you could have a look at my map and contribute any suggestions and improvements (Wikipedia being what it is, you're free to fiddle with the file, of course) - I plan on adding the EU as a option for people to select in the next update (hopefully by month's end). --Canuckguy (talk) 02:32, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hello! Thank you very much! Yes, obviously the "flat" map projections that show the whole world will always be able to illustrate things which the orthographic map can't. I honestly can't see anything wrong with your map (but yes, adding the EU as a borderless option is probably a good idea). What I've done with the orthographic maps doesn't involve magic; it's pretty much just finding the ideal "coordinates" in the generator ([2]), converting it to an SVG, merging the land area and turning lakes and rivers into holes in it, removing the default black shorelines, altering colours (adding the colours from the robinson) and adding a shade. - SSJ ☎ 18:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello! I've seen you have overwritten my version of this map with yours. First of all I would like to know who says that there are "standard colours" for thematic mapping? I work at de: and there we don't have such standards. Then you deleted the text inside the map. Now this map doesn't work as a map on its own but needs an extra description. That's no good cartography. As the file name ends with -de it's clear that this is a German map. It would have been easy to create an -en version just by translating. Now the -de ending is completely senseless. And in the end I am quite surprised that you didn't contact me for it. I'm still active in Wikipedia and I can see no reason for overwriting it without a note. Your version of the map is just different but definitely not better. You easily could have uploaded it with a different name. --NNW (talk) 11:16, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi there,
What did you mean with "wikify" that section of that article? I think I can definitely help to improve that section.
Thanks,Miguel.mateo (talk) 09:01, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- The section is currently a hybrid between a list and prose in the form of quasi sub-section bulletpoints. I personally think that's something that needs to be wikified, i.e. to be rewritten and reorganised into one ore more conventional chunks of text. Aside from wikification, bringing in the political and institutional aspects of the euro area would probably also make sense in that section. - SSJ ☎ 11:52, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

- True, but the section is following the same standards as the whole article. As you can see I am not the only one that see nothing wrong with the section (someone else reverted your change). I would suggest you bring this topic to the talk page of the article, maybe the whole article layout need to change. Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 02:05, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
India map
Dear Ssolbergj, your map of China colors Arunachal Pradesh in light green (together with Taiwan)which implies it is somehow rather a part of CHina although under Indian administration. Why then doesn't the India map have Aksai Chin (a Chinese administered region claimed by India) be colored light green on the India map? Same goes with Pakistan occupied kashmir. Shouldn't those areas be in light green too? Please maintain neutrality as prescribed under Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. I look forward to you recoloring those maps with a NPOV in mind and not China slanted views. (Reference: [3] vs [4].
