History

Iran Khodro was founded with registered capital of 100,000,000 Rls. on 18 Aug 1962 by Mr. Aliakbar Khayami, Mr. Ahmad Khayami, Mr. Mahmoud Khayami, Mrs. Marzieh Khayami, and Mrs. Zahra Seyedi Rashti in Ekbatan Street in Tehran. Iran Khodro (IKCO) is a public joint stock company with the objective of creation and management of factories to manufacture various types of vehicles and parts as well as selling and exporting them. Now, after 45 years, we continue to design and manufacture automobiles and buses as the largest vehicle manufacturer in the Middle East, and try to supply for domestic demand, penetrate into global markets, go deeper into locally part manufacturing, and eventually, to help realize the high objectives of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran Khodro is the largest vehicle manufacturing company in Iran, having an average share of 65 percent of domestic vehicle production. In 1997, IKCO broke the production record in the 30-year history of the company by producing 111,111 units of various passenger cars and vans. Now, Iran Khodro produces 550,000 vehicles for the Iranian year 1384 (starting on 21 March 2006). Furthermore, the company was able to improve the quantity and quality of its products remarkably. Iran Khodro has received ISO 9001 from RW-TUV, Germany, as well as many other health, safety, and environment certificates including ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Iran Khodro produces Iran's first national car, the Samand, which is based on the Peugeot 405 platform. The firm has a long-term relationship with PSA Peugeot Citroën, and assembles a number of Peugeot models under licence from the French firm. It also makes trucks and buses under license from Mercedes-Benz.

For more than 3 decades, Iran Khodro produced the Paykan (a version developed by Rootes Group's Hillman Hunter). Paykan's production was discontinued in 2005, almost thirty years after the end of Hillman Hunter production in Britain. A pick-up version is still in production. [1]

In a joint-venture with Daimler AG, Iran Khodro is soon to start production of sophisticated 900-class Mercedes-Benz engines; Daimler stresses that the company will export Iran-made engines to Germany. [1] [2]

Market

Carmakers have come to realise the importance of external markets and are seeking export opportunities both for CBUs and CKD kits supplied to assembly lines, mostly for Iran Khodro’s Samand model, which is assembled from at least 80% Iranian-made parts. The opening of the country’s largest car assembly plant in Khorassan in July 2008 will increase automotive capacity with the ability to turn out 100,000 vehicles per annum by end- 2008/09, However, it will not necessarily increase production. Export opportunities are restricted to relatively low volumes. Nevertheless, they should help push up output to 1.13mn units by 2012.[3]
